From the Greek kolla meaning gleaned graphe, meaning writing, a "collagraph" is means of plate making through a manner of collage. Plates are normally made through sticking materials like cut paper and carborundum grit onto a surface such as cardboard, metal and wood. When the surface is sealed, the plate can be printed using an etching press, as there are both raised and incised marks to be printed.

Collagraphs can be made from any material that can safely pass through the press. They are know for creating very textured, deep impressions.
